Snippet Sunday: Overlooking The Fjord

Today we're going with the first sentences that introduce Gabriel in our manuscript. We first meet him in Norway, photographing high over a fjord.

The wind blew cold from the north, filling the fjord, bringing a chill to the man standing at his tripod on the steep southern slope. Gabriel Miller glanced away from the camera, looking at the skies, seeing clouds to the west, and frowned. He wanted the right light, but the weather might turn against him. Far below, down on the surface of the Sognefjorden, a boat waited near shore, his transport back to town. I wonder if the old man is getting anxious, he thought. Looking across the water to the slope he had been photographing, he sighed. His plan had been to capture the north slope in late afternoon sunlight. Those clouds were coming fast, and he knew he had lost the chance to get the images he wanted.

Six Sentence Sunday

Today we have another Six Sentence Sunday blog for you, from Same Time Tomorrow. This passage is from early in the book, introducing one of our two main characters, Gabriel Miller. He's on assignment in Norway when we first meet him, photographing high on a slope overlooking the scenic Sognefjorden on a cold day, feeling quite isolated and on his own. And so, without further ado, here we have it:

Sognefjorden, Norway

Gabriel zipped up the bag, hoisting it on his shoulder, glancing once more to the west. The clouds continued to move closer, dark and brooding. There might be snow coming; certainly there was enough of it still on the slopes. Starting down the path he had come from, he was careful, mindful of the slope, not wanting to take a bad step. After all, I’m supposed to attend that party in New York next week. Wouldn’t do to show up in a cast, would it?

An Astonishing View From The Top

We have our friend Eve Gaal to thank for originally setting us onto this place. Awhile back we got a slideshow of images from her about this outcrop, and we think it might be an ideal place to write into future works. Preikestolen is known in English as Pulpit Rock or Preacher's Rock. It's a massive cliff over the Lysefjorden in Norway, and each year, thousands of hikers make the trip up to the overhang to take in the view. It looks like a smashing place to be, and we think that it would be a fine place for our characters Chloe and Gabriel to visit in a future book. After all, part of our book Same Time Tomorrow actually starts in Norway, and it seems right to head back there. In the meantime, we thought we'd do a photoblog of the place. Just as long as you don't have a problem with heights....
